LANSING — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer presented her budget recommendations today for the 2019-20 fiscal year to a joint meeting of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. Among her recommendations were increasing school funding by $507 million — the largest increase since 2002 — and $180 million in additional funding for water contamination clean up. In response to the recommendation, House Democratic Floor Leader Yousef Rabhi (D-Ann Arbor) issued the following statement:

“Gov. Whitmer has wasted no time making up for the years of underfunding and corporate cronyism that devastated our state’s environment, education, and economy. Every Michigander deserves the freedom to live in a healthy environment and to know our students have the resources they need to succeed. That’s why I was excited to see the governor propose the largest increase in education funding in nearly two decades; because when our schools thrive, so do our communities. Every child should have access to quality education, and I look forward to working with Gov. Whitmer to ensure that becomes a reality.”
