Important advances in land preservation were made this week by Representative Warren and members of the Michigan Legislature. On April 15, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution introduced by Rep. Warren designating Michigan's second annual Conservation Week as Land Preservation Week. Land Preservation Week will take place April 20-27 and offer conservation groups and educators an opportunity to raise awareness about the necessity of preserving Michigan's land-based natural resources. In addition to celebrating Michigan's 37 million acres of lakes, rivers, and streams, bountiful wetlands and sand dunes, and precious forests, the resolution recognizes that Michigan's 21st century prosperity and quality of life are inextricably linked to the health of these resources. A similar resolution was passed in the Senate.
The designation of Land Preservation Week preceded an announcement of legislation that will enhance the state's ability to protect land and develop recreational facilities. Senator Patty Birkholz (R-Saugatuck) and Representative Steve Lindberg (D-Marquette) have proposed bills that will allow voters to increase the amount of money available for the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, one of the most dynamic conservation tools in the nation. Established in 1976, the tool has twice been updated by voters, most recently in 2002. Over the years, rising land prices have hindered its ability to acquire and protect land. The proposed changes will increase the Trust Fund's capacity to invest in Michigan's future.
